The UNI-T UT301A+ Infrared Thermometer is a compact unit that comes with the thermometer, required single 9V battery, carrying case, and a simple manual. Activating the unit is as simple as flipping the red grip section forward and inserting the 9V battery, then closing the grip. Pulling the trigger gives you a reading, although, like me, you’ll likely want to switch from Celsius to Fahrenheit first.
Consistency is what matters most, even above pinpoint accuracy, which is difficult with a consumer infrared thermometer. Fortunately, the UNI-T has excellent consistency when reading temperatures from the same spot. I was able to get good readings from various air conditioning vents, behind TVs and game consoles, and other areas I wanted to check for hot or cold spots.
The thermometer’s temperature range is -25.6 to 788 degrees Fahrenheit (-32 degrees to 420 degrees Celsius), with an average 250ms response time. There’s also a high/low temperature reading and alarm, as well as lock measurements. The manual succinctly describes operating distance and effectiveness, as well as the emissivity (energy radiation) of various materials. In short, the UNI-T provides everything the non-professional would likely need in such a device. It’s highly recommended.
