Two recent flybys of Io, Jupiter’s intriguing moon, by the NASA Juno spacecraft, have revealed more detail about the most volcanic world in the solar system. As a result, the Juno spacecraft data has been used to create an animation of “Steeple Mountain” and a lava lake known as Loki Patera on Jupiter’s moon Io.
Io has been known as volcanically active for many decades, but new data suggests that the moon has been spewing lava since shortly after the creation of our solar system more than 4 billion years ago. You can read a detailed breakdown on Space.com.
