This is a good move by Astrohaus as the distraction-free space is incredibly competitive, with many options available now, as well as coming soon. While there’s nothing really distraction-free about this keyboard, the fact that it has an onboard word counter and timer means it can be a nice productivity tool, regardless of your preferred platform or software.

I’ve owned, and own, all of the previous Astrohaus distraction-free writing devices. They’re generally very good, and I’ve always considered the mechanical keyboard on the flagship Smart Typewriter to feature a superb typing experience. It makes me think that this mechanical keyboard, despite the plethora of superb mechanical keyboard options out there, could still be a standout.

For starters, both the keyboard and mouse operate off of a single USB dongle, which limits the number of ports in use. The keyboard and mouse are also incredibly compact, which is ideal for smaller hands. They also take design cues from relatively recent Apple Mac products, so that was a plus in terms of aesthetics. Although the Trueque bundle is available in Black, Green, and White, our daughter opted for Pink. It’s a somewhat peachy pink, but pink nonetheless and I’d say a fine choice if you like that color.

While the box the Trueque comes in is not particularly inspiring, both the keyboard and mouse worked immediately on her computer with zero configuration or setup. Of course, we did have to insert two AAA batteries in the keyboard and one AA in the mouse, neither of which were included, but that’s certainly nothing to complain about with a sub-$20 price point.

Even with our low expectations, the Trueque Wireless Keyboard and Mouse is an easy recommendation. Both the keyboard and mouse look and feel great, and they worked immediately on our daughter’s Windows 11 computer. We certainly wouldn’t hesitate buying this again if we needed another simple, inexpensive, and compact mouse and keyboard combination.

Some of the stand-out features include adjustable touch response for the weighted keys, 43 demo songs, 83 rhythms, 128 tones, a teaching mode, a metronome, chords and effects, USB MIDI support (useful for app-based learning apps or interfacing with other devices; I had no trouble interfacing with my iPad, for instance), built-in speakers, headphone jack, and 3.5mm audio output (if you want to connect to external speakers). The piano itself has a slide-out slipcover for the keys. The included padded piano bench rounds out a really nice package, although I will say it’s on the small side and not particularly well-padded, so that’s definitely an area rife for an upgrade.

One thing to note is that this thing is huge. The box is oversized and requires at least two people to move it. The box is quite long and awkward and with its contents weighs more than 100 pounds. This is no diminutive electronic keyboard. Even out of the box the whole setup measures 53.7 inches across and weighs just over 88 pounds.

One of the things I really like about this piano is that it has three built-in pedals: soft, sostenuto, and sustain. I’ve had issues making a separate sustain pedal work properly with my keyboards in the past, so this is a big plus for me.

Setup was relatively straightforward, with the piano portion already pre-assembled. The comprehensive manual was intuitive. In short, I don’t anticipate anyone having issues with building this.

If you’re looking for an attractive display instrument that won’t break the bank, you’ll get a lot of mileage out of the MouKey. While it’s no match for premium big-name instruments in the sound department, it’s also 2 – 4 times lower in price. It’s highly recommended.
