New research shows life building blocks can more easily form in space

In the new paper, “Formation of extraterrestrial peptides and their derivatives,” published in the journal, Science Advances, researchers have put forth the idea that instead of a spontaneous transition from non-living to living matter under certain primordial conditions on Earth, delivery from space could instead provide distinct advantages due to an ability to deliver a wider range of organic molecules in concentrated form.

Abstract

The formation of protein precursors, due to the condensation of atomic carbon under the low-temperature conditions of the molecular phases of the interstellar medium, opens alternative pathways for the origin of life. We perform peptide synthesis under conditions prevailing in space and provide a comprehensive analytic characterization of its products. The application of ¹³C allowed us to confirm the suggested pathway of peptide formation that proceeds due to the polymerization of aminoketene molecules that are formed in the C + CO + NH₃ reaction. Here, we address the question of how the efficiency of peptide production is modified by the presence of water molecules. We demonstrate that although water slightly reduces the efficiency of polymerization of aminoketene, it does not prevent the formation of peptides.

Large number of repeated radio signals coming from galaxy 1.5 billion light years away!

It’s not aliens until it’s aliens. A Fast Radio Burst, or FRB, is a high-energy astrophysical phenomenon first discovered in 2007. It’s manifested as a transient radio pulse lasting a few milliseconds on average, with no known cause or origin. What’s most interesting is that up until the reporting of this new story in the Independent, these signals were only found to repeat themselves only one other time. Now, scientists have seen a signal repeat six times over a period of a few weeks, and all from the same location.

While there’s a strong possibility that scientists will discover that FRBs are indeed a natural phenomenon, there’s definitely still reason to hope that these signals could be from or a side effect of an advanced civilization. Of course, said advanced civilization would have sent the signal 1.5 billion years ago, so it’s unlikely they’re still around, but proof would be proof, regardless of vintage. This is definitely something to keep an eye on going forward.
